My Portfolio

I specialize in creating high-quality indexes for technical content, including user guides, programming books, and technical documentation. My work includes both embedded indexing and traditional back-of-the-book indexing, designed to help readers quickly find the information they need.

The examples below were created for practice and demonstration purposes. They were not paid projects and are not affiliated with the publishers in any way. For each index I either found or recreated the publisher’s indexing style guide and used that to create the index.

A focused back-of-the-book index for a technical guide to the terminal multiplexer tmux. This index emphasizes command references, configuration options, and practical usage patterns for advanced users working in a command-line environment.

A beginner-friendly back-of-the-book index for a practical guide to Git. Designed for non-developers such as designers and content creators, the index highlights common version control tasks and collaborative workflows without heavy technical jargon.

A back-of-the-book index for a guide to the Hugo static site generator. The index supports web developers and content creators, covering topics such as theme customization, templating, and deployment workflows.

An embedded index created using Index-Manager for a graduate school research paper written in Microsoft Word. The paper explores how technical communicators contribute to developer portals and enhance the overall developer experience. This example demonstrates the value of embedded indexing in long-form professional writing. Coauthored with Sonia Verma and used with permission.

NOTE: Index starts on page 29.

Bowman Indexing Services

I make technical content easier to find and use with back-of-the-book and embedded indexes.

I do not use any LLM-based generative AI programs for index creation. All work is done by a human being (me).
